Paggasus - Arepas are very similar to Mexican sopes, but they’re different in that they usually have cheese in the dough and they’re usually not stuffed or topped with anything. Normally, you get a greasy, cheese one in a piece of wax paper. Those are really delicious, too :)

These look delicious! I just watched a Bobby Flay Throwdown the other day that featured these. The women who owned the restaurant were from Venezuela, I believe.

They seem similar to Mexican sopes. How are they different?

Thanks Paula! Arepas are just little corn pancakes. I actually find them easier to make than regular pancakes - I’m not very good at flipping things :)

Mindy - I’d never cooked with masarepa either, but it was so simple that I’m definitely going to use it more often :)

Yum–You’re using 2 of my absolute favorites: crab and avocado. I’ve never cooked with masa or arepa, but I’m sure it’s available in my area. Sounds delish!
